Draft Tips #24 - Surviving on freelance work and extend those holidays!

Brrr.... Winter is here!  And so are the holidays!  It's a wonderful time of year!

Being unemployed makes this season that much tougher.  Not only is money tight, but a lot of businesses will give you the - well, that person is out for the holidays so we'll decide early next year excuse.

Instead, you can keep your skills fresh and make some money at the same time.  Here's how to survive doing freelance or contract work.

Alternatively, so many places are hiring for the holidays that it's a great time to get a seasonal job.  I was just at the mall today and saw signs in just about every store.

While retail may not be your favorite cup of tea, here's how to extend that job beyond the holidays.

Draft Tips #23 - 14 things to look for, impress the robots, and what if it was Bizzaro world?

This weekend, I had the chance to attend a UMass football game at Gillette with my son.  It was great weather for a game and always great to be in that type of surrounding.

When you go to a game like that, ever notice certain things?  Like how robotic the ticket takers or concessions can be?  Or ever wish they understood how standing in line or being herded like cattle can be aggravating?

That like job hunting.  With technology, it seems like you are trying to impress robots instead of an actual human being.  Well, to get that robot to notice you, use these tips.

During the interview and job hunt process, take time to notice these things.  These are not normally things that people see, but can tell a lot about where you are trying to get a job.

What if the world was turned upside down, and recruiters had to go through what candidates go through?  Here's a tongue-in-cheek-but-not-so-funny look at the process.

Draft Tips #22 - What are your best tips?

Sometimes, you just need a change.

Like trying a new restaurant, or a new outfit to wear.  Or, for me, this weekend was doing these new workout DVDs with my girlfriend.

It was a different type of exercise than what we've done in the past, but it was still difficult nonetheless.  As I'm typing this, my legs are really sore.

Speaking of change, this week, I'd like to hear from you.  Post comments below on your best tips on:

Interviewing
Networking / job hunting
Resume writing
Salary negotiating

Even if you're still looking for a job, there certainly are things you've done well in the job hunt process. Let's share and help each other!

Draft Tips #21 - The most important 6 seconds, 5 signs, and Moneyball

This weekend was great! The Red Sox won the World Series and had a great parade on a great day.  But if you're like me, it's a little sad to think that baseball is over.

But that doesn't mean some of the principles of baseball don't apply to job seeking.  Baseball is about probabilities, and sometimes so too is the job seeking process.  Here's what interviewers look for?

When your resume is seen by a human being, what does that person look at?  Here's the answer.

Regardless, sometimes working for a bad employer is worse than not working at all.  Watch out for these 5 signs.

Draft Tips #20 - Don't follow these rules, ace your interview, and ask these questions

Sometimes, you need to go to the basics while recognizing that times have changed.

Like playing fundamental baseball - the Sox are killing themselves with errors in this World Series...but I digress...

Going back to the basics is good, but make sure you also keep up with the times.  Here are 7 "basic rules" that should be broken.

Once you have the interview, don't forget these basics.  Professionalism and common courtesy never go out of style.

In the interview, as in sales, one way you earn credibility and trust is by asking great questions.  How often do you ask these?

Draft Tips #19 - Don't find a job, make a job

Back in 2004, I was working in a large regional bank handling small to mid-sized businesses and their loan requests.  I had my own little office, and a nice title and salary.

But I was miserable.

Sick of the big bank, I left for a small bank doing the same thing.

Well, 6 months later, the large bank I left announced that they were buying the small bank.

We all had to re-interview for our jobs, and while there were nice people, I wasn't interested in going back.

So, I went to another institution which was really the first professional taste of what I now.

Well, that didn't work out either.  That organization changed their mind in what they wanted to do.

Back out on the street I went, and that's when I decided to start my own practice.  It's been hard, and a lot of blood, sweat and tears.  And I struggle with motivation and discipline all of the time.

But I wouldn't trade it for anything.

So, as you are looking for that next great opportunity, consider making your next great opportunity.

Here's some tips on how to start with less than $100.

And there's lots of websites out there letting people freelance as a way to start their own company.  This article talks about this new economy.

Can you actually make a living doing odd jobs?  Yes you can.  This article highlights someone who does.
